We are committed to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue
The Aleksandr Savchuk Cancer Charity is committed to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue at the crossroads of art, science, and medicine through its thoughtfully curated symposiums. These events serve as platforms for exploring the therapeutic, cultural, and philosophical dimensions of art in addressing global challenges. Recent highlights include the symposium “In the Face of Natural Disasters, War, and Pandemics: What is the Therapeutic Potential of Art?” held at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, and “Repairing the World with Art” hosted by the Scientific Centre of Monaco. Both events brought together leading experts to investigate how art can inspire care, healing, and innovative approaches to human well-being. We are delighted that the Université Bordeaux Montaigne has agreed to collect and publish some of the papers from both symposia in a special issue of the journal “Questions Philosophiques”.
Our Foundation hosted an interdisciplinary conference “In the Face of Natural Disasters, War, and Pandemics: What is the Therapeutic Potential of Art?”.
A crucial aspect of the event was the screening of performance videos by the Milky Way project, alongside the active participation of Taisiya Polishchuk and Olga Kisseleva.
The event initiated by Institut ACTE – Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne and National Academy of Arts of Ukraine. The event was supported by the Aleksandr Savchuk Cancer Charity.
The conference aimed to explore the new therapeutic functions of a work of art and the impact it can have in times of great challenges. The event fostered cross-disciplinary research involving art, aesthetics, sociology, art history, medicine, and neuroscience. Experts from various fields and speakers from leading global institutions explored how the contemplation of aesthetic objects affects the human body and improves mental health and well-being.
The event was organized in the format of three panels: “How Can Art Fix the World?”, “Art and War”, “Art and Care”, followed by a joint discussion. The conference closed with the video-performative section “Femmes Guerrières” of the Milky Way project. Discussions were important considering the initiative of the National Academy of Arts in running the project “Rehabilitation: Art Therapy” project, supported by The Aleksandr Savchuk Cancer Charity and Art Support Fund.
The conference sowed the seeds of new views on the functionality of art, revealed the versatility of the scientific approach to the cultural component and provided fertile ground for further cooperation in science and rehabilitation projects.
The Scientific Centre of Monaco hosted a symposium “Repairing the world with art” to highlight projects carried out in the area at the crossroads of contemporary art, art therapy and medical research. This was to be an extension of the debates held at the Palais de Tokyo and aimed to bring out new approaches and unprecedented ways of approaching the question of the work in dialogue with research. We wanted to promote singular reflections, initiated as much by the arts and aesthetics as by medicine or neuroscience, in order to identify the specificities of art as a tool for repairing the world. We studied the practices of care and the role of art as a therapeutic tool. Focusing on the evolution of art towards care functions, our study looked at artistic production as creating multiple connections between the perception of aesthetic objects and the restoration of the vital functions of the human body.
